Turning Times: In 1986, the Uruguayan Parliament passed a law granting amnesty for all crimes and human rights violations committed by the military and police during the dictatorship (1973-85). This law of impunity prevented the clarification demanded by the relatives of those who had disappeared and been murdered by the former regime. A public initiative arose calling for a people's referendum. Kristina Konrad and María Barhoum, two friends, one a Swiss new to the country, the other a Syrian-Uruguayan communist who had just returned from exile, took a camera onto the streets of Uruguay and interviewed anybody willing to talk to them between 1987 and 1989. After the devastating failure of the referendum and the death of María Barhoum, the material was left untouched for almost 30 years before Konrad edited UNAS PREGUNTAS to fulfil the wish of Barhoum. UNAS PREGUNTAS doesn't get tired of asking questions and listening at any given point – an example of democracy in action rooted deeply in a filmmaking friendship. (Clarissa Thieme)
